And the Juno Goes to...
Our homie Shad talks about his recent Juno win for 2011 Canadian Rap Recording of the Year and much more!
The Drake Hotel will host a Toronto Graffiti Summit Town Hall on May 31st to discuss and present ideas to address the city’s recent stand on the subject under Rob Ford’s campaign promise to “clean up our city’s streets.”
The town hall meeting will address both sides of the issue and feature presentations from people involved in the world of graf as well as people negatively affected by the ‘vandalism’ of public spaces, in order to find a balance between freedom of expression through street art and preservation of private property.
Syrus Ware, Program Coordinator of Youth Programs at the Art Gallery of Ontario will provide credence to the art form & its importance to modern art. Paula “La Bomba” Gonzalez-Ossa, Graffiti Artist will provide a street artist perspective and how marginalized youth can find positive outlets through the art form. Panelists will include Shawn “Zion” Jones, Graffiti legend and Owner of The Bomb Shelter and Jeff Melanson, Special Advisor on the Arts to Toronto Mayor Rob Ford amongst several others.
This will be an important step in defining how Toronto really views this issue and how we can proceed with this impending crackdown on street art. I personally think that graffiti is just as important an art form as any other and that freedom of expression through public forums should not be silenced. It adds character to our lack luster and otherwise bland structures however, I believe there are certain lines that should not be crossed such as the defacement of historical and heritage buildings. Where do YOU stand on this issue?
The Summit begins at 7pm inside The Drake Hotel (1150 Queen St. West) with seating on a first-come, first-serve basis and is FREE for all to attend. If this is a topic of discussion that is important to you (which I sure many of our readers would say, is) then this may be something worth checking out.

Kanye West is invited to the Royal Wedding and the Obama’s were not, according to USA Today. Is this a Royal snub to the Obama’s or is this traditional protocol? Prince William and Kate have invited some big celebrities, such as Kanye West, along with heads of state to their Royal Nuptials. Then why have they left the President and Michele Obama off the list?
A list of 1,900 folks are invited to the Royal Wedding and Kayne West is one of them. While he is very big in the music world, he holds no where near the prestige that the Commander and Chief of the United States of America does, or does he in this case?
According to E Online, in this case he does. Prince William and Kate are inviting who they want to their wedding and Kayne West, being a popular singer of their time, may be one of the special guests. As far as President Obama goes, British protocol does not include inviting World leaders for the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate. This is because William is not next in line for the British Throne.

TMZ is reporting that DJ Pauly D is extremely close to joining 50 Cent's G-Unit Records. The two have apparently met in New York City last week to discuss a three-album record deal for the "Jersey Shore" star. Sources also told TMZ that Curtis is looking to complete the deal before Pauly heads over to Italy to shoot the upcoming season of Jersey Shore. Um, where's Vinny's deal? LOL

The most important 3 hours for hip-hop in Toronto has always been Saturdays from 1-4pm on CKLN 88.1 FM.
It all began back in 1983, when legendary radio host/concert promoter Ron Nelson first broadcast The Fantastic Voyage (1983-1988) from Ryerson University’s campus, making it the first hip-hop radio show to exist anywhere in the nation. The timeslot continued to gain historical significance and cultural relevance with the three shows that followed – The Power Move Show (1988-2000), The Real Frequency (2001-2005) and Mixtape Massacre (2005-present). CKLN’s been rocking the airwaves and our eardrums for nearly 30 years, making it the longest-running source for hip-hop music in Canada.
On Saturday, February 12, 2011, a monumental gathering took place when all four generations of radio shows came together for a single broadcast. Thinking it would be their last, Mixtape Massacre invited their predecessors to each play one hour dedicated to the era of hip-hop they represented while they were on the air.
CKLN had its license revoked by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) at the end of January due to problems with how the radio station conducted its operations (Decision 2011-56). But the day before its last broadcast, CKLN was granted a stay, allowing the station to remain on the air pending a decision by the Federal Court of Appeal. The mood that Saturday quickly turned from somber to celebratory.
“1 to 4” is a six-minute documentary capturing the historic radio show that took place on February 12, 2011. It features footage and interviews with Canadian hip-hop legends Michie Mee, Ron Nelson, Thrust and DJ X, along with P-Plus, Arcee, DJ Linx and Big Jacks.

Hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Toronto, Ontario we bring you Good Company; the duo of Pittsburgh MC Ayatollah Jaxx and Producer Fundamental of Toronto. In 2009 they welcomed success with their debut; "The Damn Good EP" which spawned two music videos and accumulated over twelve thousand downloads.
Now their long awaited LP ‘This Time Next Year’ is here, and it is not an album to sleep on.
This old school joint mixed with poetic flavour creates a style rarely heard today. The lyrics and flow allow us to remember the time of such greats as Nas and Common. The artist takes us on a journey back to the 90s before Hip Hop was commercialized and creates a sense of nostalgia.
For those looking for a classic feel, I recommend Good Company’s ‘This Time Next Year’.
The Good Company tandem have released their first full studio album, "This Time Next Year"; an extremely personal concept album about the struggles of dealing with external conflict while breaking into the music industry. The nine track album features fellow Canadian MCs Elley Jeeze and Cashtro Crosby. Also featured are L.E.G.A.C.Y of The Justus League, Dominique Larue and Varsity Squad.

Rapper Paul Frappier, known as Bad News Brown, has been found dead. Bad News Brown's death is a great loss for the entire hip-hop and music community in Quebec and Canada, Frappier's manager Henry Gelot said in the statement. "In addition to being one of the first rappers from Quebec to reach international acclaim, Bad News Brown has certainly left a mark on everyone who knew him."
Originally from Haiti, Frappier lived with an adoptive family in Montreal until his teen years. He played harmonica in the Metro stations before becoming a star. The hip-hop star opened for Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, 50 Cent and Soulja Boy. He released his debut album, Born 2 Sin, last year. He is also in the latest movie from Canadian director Michel Jette called Bumrush, due out this year.
Indeed sad day in hip-hop and will be forever missed.

The Graffiti scene in Canada has been alive for a while now, and as it continues to grow stronger it’s nice to see a real trailblazer for graffiti, especially in the city of Toronto finding a permanent home in the market. For those familiar with the Toronto graf scene all it takes is to say SKAM’s name and the words “legend” or “king” should come to mind.
SKAM opened HOMEBASE in Toronto last year, a perfect mix of the graffiti and streetwear scenes.
Homebase stocks a great variety of Graffiti supplies. Stocking Montana German Spray Paint by the walls-full, they will stock books, bags, toys, accessories and anything you could think you or your artist might want.
Check them out onFacebook for more information on the brands they stock and how to get to the shop.

Hip hop is not just a form of music, it is a lifestyle; there are actually four elements that make up the base of this culture. These are: B-boying, Graffiti, Emceeing and Dee-Jaying, but many branches spring from the basic elements. What H.E.R. aims to accomplish is to inform and express the true meaning of hip hop.
